I had never heard "music is like water," but of course the only free water is rainwater or whatever you find in a pond or stream. Who drinks that? You can drink from a fountain without paying for it, but that water has been processed and purified. Someone is paying for it.

Copying or downloading music (printed or recorded) without paying for it is more like tapping into someone else's electricity or phone service. It's stealing. Someone has to pay for it. If everyone steals it instead, after a while there won't be anything worthwhile to steal.

Myspace is now largely musicians promoting to other musicians that don't even care, it's the sad truth. Having said that, it is still needed as there are people that genuinely go on there to hear their favourite artists. It's not what it once was, but it's still useful.

I'm custodian of the FEU (Federation of Entertainment Unions)online training's social network. I'm always on the look out for informative, relevant and most importantly internet savy union members and bloggers.

Great little Toolkit with some fundamentally important links to aid self preservation in a crazy creative world.

This article has been tagged in Delicious and is now listed in our "Articles from around the Web" content box.

Nice post. Thanks

I couldn't agree more. Edgar is a very melodic musician and welcoming too.

I don't know which is worse, an audience so rarified it can make judgements on what is or isn't Jazz or someone conducting a loud conversation right in front of me whilst doing a ballad (I've had both.)

I agree, the snobbery of the musicians can put one off having a go n jamming at a jazz session, it did me for years, but as a musician, one can avoid those types of musicians, and find friendlier sessions. I found Edgar Macias particularly welcoming. But it's the seriousness of the audience that annoys me. The whole "oh, he played a flattened 9th over a non-dominant chord. (snigger snigger) I won't come & see him again." I have actually overheard people in the audience saying "that's not jazz" in the middle of a solo, & it makes me rather angry.... It's not your idea of jazz maybe, but some of us like a simpler, more melodic, in tune form of jazz. It doesn't have to be bathed in "out" notes, thanks.

Like i say, one can avoid playing with the snobby musicians, but you can't choose who comes to watch you play. All you can do is develop a thick skin & not care if you put peoples backs up if you don't play their idea of what jazz should be.

Absolutely. There are so many double standards and so much hypocrisy around charitable events.

Good and brave post, Andy with some sound advice.

Hi Andy
Just a note to say thanks for the namecheck at We7.
(sorry a bit delayed but my Google alert has only just picked it up)

We are continuing to push the ball up the hill with Ad funded music and opening opportunities to labels and artists alike. Not always getting the balance right but we are winning more than not and user traction is growing rapidly now.

Also, hopefully, you know we have some brilliant jazz on the site and you can drop any of the playlists albums etc onto your blog to be played if you want to use any tracks artists as examples.

Anyway thanks again

Good Blog BTW

Steve

CEO We7

Some good advice here Andy. Having done A&R for many years, I can relate.

Point 1 though, I think the wording has to change depending on who you send it to I reckon. I've never minded the word 'demo', but if I was a promoter 'promo' would be best.

One Biggie is NEVER add someone to your mailing list without permission, you'll get no brownie points for that one!

Presentation is important, along with originality. I'll shoot myself if I see another black and white picture of a band looking moody with a brick wall behind them. Putting something unique in there can work sometimes, something to remember you by, I've had everything from condoms to bag's of mini egg's. Shame what they sent in wasn't as good, but what that does is motivate the person listening to pay more attention and want to find out more.

The majority of commercial radio in the UK does not programme Jazz but a google of commercial radio uk should yield good results. The BBC does run Jazz nationally and locally, have a look at www.bbc.co.uk
